Erin and Jeff are great friends of Kim and Keith, whose wedding I photographed back in September.  I look forward to seeing them again at Erin and Jeff’s wedding next month at Swan-E-Set.  I just KNOW it is going to be a fun and fabulous wedding day!

Oh, and Happy Birthday, Erin!  I hope you’re having a wonderful birthday… see you soon!!

And their choice of the Sutton Place Hotel as the location for both the ceremony and reception was a good one as well.  The warmth and elegance of Sutton Place lent itself beautifully to their wedding and provided the backdrop for more stunning photos… I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect wedding to photograph.  With flowers by Suzanne of Granville Island Florist, decor by Colin of Upright Decor, cake by Peter of Ganache Patisserie, the bride’s Lazaro gown from Bisou Bridal and jewels by Elsa Corsi, it was a feast for the eyes as well as my camera!

Congratulations, Sue and Steve!  You two were such a pleasure to work with and I love that you chose me to document your beautiful wedding day.

The Hart House in Burnaby is such a wonderful location for a wedding ceremony and reception.  I’ve had the pleasure of photographing several weddings there this year and their huge marquee tent was literally transformed this time by the incredibly talented Kim Raddysh and her wonderful team at Wedding Design Studio.  I always love working with Kim as she is a true artist and she really takes the time to work with the bride and groom.  Together, they always come up with a unique vision for each and every wedding.

One of the highlights of the Showcase every year is the Haute Couture Fashion Show… I was honoured to photograph this beautiful event for Lorna Paterson of Blush Bridal & Special Occasions.  Many of my Sweet Pea brides are also Blush brides and I was thrilled to see the latest in wedding gown creations by designers such as Vera Wang, Romona Keveza, Ines Di Santo, Rivini, Kenneth Pool, Amsale and Christos.  It was an absolute feast for my eyes and my camera to photograph the show!  I look forward to hopefully photographing many of my brides wearing these incredible gowns…

Michael’s parents, Lewis and Amber Buble hosted 500 of their close family and friends in the Crystal Ballroom at the Pan Pacific and it truly was a party to remember!

The entire event was masterfully planned and executed by the talented and hard working Pat Rekert of In Any Event Design.  The Ballroom was literally transformed… in fact, I heard someone refer to it as stunningly elegant version of Heaven’s waiting room!  This was all a result of the genius of Sandy Godfree of Art of the Party.  Also working with Sandy on the florals to accent the decor was the artistic Suzanne of Granville Island Florists.  It was amazing to work alongside this Dream Team of very talented women to photograph their work and document the evening.  The guests were treated to an memorable evening they won’t soon forget.

Congratulations, Michael and Luisana!  And thank you for having me be a part of your incredible wedding celebration here in Vancouver.  I wish you both a lifetime of love and happiness…

Fast forward twenty years later, I am now a photographer and my teenage daughter has expressed an interest in modeling.  One day her agent calls to say she has a job for her, shooting for Blanche McDonald Centre.  When I ask her who the photographer is, I am floored when she tells me… Gaetano Fasciana.  Who would have thought?  Years earlier, the photographer whose work I had admired from afar was now going to photograph my daughter… I went along on the shoot, not only to chaperone but excited to finally meet him.  At first, I was nervous and a bit surprised by how quiet and unassuming he was.  When I had the opportunity, I introduced myself and told him how I had admired his work for many years… he seemed flattered, but also a little surprised.  I spent most of the day hanging in the background, fascinated, watching him work and smiling to myself at how life can work sometimes.

At the end of the day, Gaetano invited us for coffee and a friendship began.  Maddi was fortunate to have the opportunity to shoot with him several more times and I would tag along and carry the reflector and watch him work… always amazed at how he could take a model into an alleyway with very little to work with and create magic… literally, in a matter of minutes.  He really was a genius… his eye for light and shadow and composition was incredible and instinctual and all the while… he made it seem completely effortless.

Outside of work, we would meet for coffee or go for Pho at his favourite Vietnamese place on Denman and talk about life and art and photography.  The man behind the camera turned out to be far more complicated than one would think.  His genius behind the lens was matched by a fierce intelligence and a kind heart… although I soon learned that conversations with Gaetano were rarely about the weather.  He did not suffer fools and had little patience for small talk.  He lived his life on a level of consciousness unlike anyone I knew and the time we spent together was equally fascinating and exhausting.  One of many things I loved about him, aside from his very dry sense of humour, was how he encouraged me to look at life in a much deeper way.  Being friends with Gaetano was interesting and he always made you think…. which is a rare gift in a human being.

The stunning images he took of Maddi, the memories of our friendship and the time we spent together mean the world to me.  Gaetano was a unique and beautiful individual and I am proud to have called him a friend.  Wherever he is now, I can only hope he has found peace.  I know he will be missed.

The bride and groom had amazing taste and were such a pleasure to work with.  They had a vision for their wedding and it was carried out flawlessly by Lori Fraser of Lori L. Fraser Signature Events.
